How I Left My 9-5 in 9 Months

I did a podcast recently and it reminded me that I haven’t shared my backstory for a while.

“Success” can seem impossible. But it's not.

It just seems that way because you're not where you want to be.

On the other side of the coin, "success" can also happen in the blink of an eye. Even after it seems like it will never happen.

I’ve heard a lot of people say, “Nothing happens then everything happens.”

And I found that to be true for me too.

So if you’re trying to make it online, or considering giving it a shot, maybe this can give you some insights or inspiration:

How I Finally Quit My Job

In August 2021, I had no offer or plan for my future online business.

But nine months later, I made more money from my online coaching business than my 9-5.

So I quit my job and have run my online biz full-time ever since.

Here’s how I made this happen:

I’ve wanted to be an entrepreneur since I was 16.

But I didn’t know how. So I worked corporate jobs in finance and math-related fields after college.

I had good jobs at good companies and worked with good people. Yet I still hated it.

• I watched beautiful days come and go from my stale cubicle.
• I struggled to work out because I was zombified every day when I got home.
• Staring at screens all day fried my brain and zapped my energy.

I could keep going too and talk about nagging coworkers, getting micromanaged, soul-sucking meetings, commuting in traffic, having “great performance” rewarded with a 2% raise, getting stuck with grunt work, and wanting to smash my phone every morning when the alarm rang, but I think you get the point.

I had little time for myself and my family, and I didn’t enjoy the work I was doing.

Something had to change.

I knew entrepreneurship was the way out and chose online business to leverage the internet.

I tried tons of things:

• SEO
• Freelance writing
• Drop shipping
• Online courses
• Affiliate marketing
• Graphic design
• Selling rap beats (true story)

And none of it worked.

So I hired my first coach to help me succeed online.

I was in the social skills niche at the time and he convinced me to create a coaching offer.

He taught me the basics of creating offers, generating leads, and closing sales.

And during our eight weeks of coaching, I made thousands of dollars.

That’s when I realized he was onto something.

Focusing on Coaching

I eventually left the social skills niche.

But I couldn’t stop thinking about the power of coaching.

Even with a small audience, I made good money fast doing work I enjoyed.

And people need help achieving their goals — just like I needed help getting better at online business.

I decided to learn everything I could about coaching.

I read books and listened to podcasts. I studied other coaches.

And then I signed up for a life coaching certification program.

During the program, I had to give away free coaching sessions to practice and get future clients.

So I offered free sessions to friends on Twitter.

During these sessions, many were looking for help with their coaching businesses. So I coached them through their struggles.

But I wasn’t prepared for what came next…

One friend asked if he could pay for more coaching.

I was nervous and unsure what to do. But I accepted.

And that’s when I realized I had an offer people needed:

If they can help people achieve an important goal (like lose weight, improve their social skills, save time, become happier, or earn more money)...

…I could help them build a thriving coaching business.

This was in the middle of August 2021.

By October, I was charging $3,000 for this coaching.

Then $6,000 in February.

Then $8,000 in March.

And nine months after getting my first client, I left my job because I was making more with coaching.

The process I used for myself and my clients was simple.

• Create a simple coaching offer
• Find people in your market
• Start conversations with them
• See if they need help
• Pitch your offer

Yes, there are nuances and skills needed to make this work.

But it could be done in weeks.

I had clients leave their 9-5. One went from living at home to traveling the world while he worked. Others added income on the side.

And for me?

Now I have more time for myself and my family and make good money doing what I love.

And I owe it all to online coaching.

And my awesome clients, the many people who help along the way, and the support of my amazing wife.
