“In my first few weeks on Substack, I was lost. I didn’t know where to start. Then I found Rob’s profile and started connecting with him. The way he uses Notes and articles to build relationships is second to none. If you want to learn the art of relationships, Rob is your guy.”
Virgil
“Implemented Rob’s DM strategy 5 days ago and landed a client today from it. Absolute. Gold. Rob is top G in this game.”

“What's up Rob! I've been in your program for less than 2 months and have already made $4,500. Just wanted to say thank you. Your guidance has been easy to follow and it's the first time I've felt confident that I’ll be doing this full-time within the next few months. Appreciate you and everything you've done for me so far.”

THE HARD WAY TO GROW

I Sacrificed 5 Years of My Life With Practically Nothing to Show for It

Rob Riker

When I first started trying to build something online, the math seemed pretty straightforward to me.

If I could build an email list with 10,000 subscribers, I’d only need to convert 1% of them to make 100 sales per month. Just hit that number and I’d be set forever.

I wanted that badly. I wanted to build something of my own, make money doing work I deeply cared about, and eventually turn my side hustle into my full-time work.

So I worked my ass off trying to make it happen.

I wrote blog posts and sent emails. I studied successful creators, bought courses, and ran product launches.

But after five years, I had roughly 500 email subscribers and very little money to show for it.

I’m not going to lie, that was painful. I can’t tell you how many times I questioned whether I was even capable of making a living online.

Since I was doing all of this while working a full-time job, I sacrificed nights and weekends that could have been spent with my wife, friends, or just enjoying my life. I put it all into something that seemed like it may never work.

I stuck with it though. And eventually, I stopped spending nearly all of my time creating content and started deliberately building relationships.

Almost immediately, people started sharing my work, recommending me, introducing me to others, and trusting me before I ever tried to sell them anything.

I’d ask new coaching clients why they chose me, and a surprising number basically said the same thing: they just knew I was the person they wanted to work with.

They weren’t the only thing I had to get right. I still had to build good offers and learn how to sell them. But I dramatically underestimated the impact relationships would have on my business.

Once I started building relationships deliberately, my audience grew faster, people started trusting me more, and followers started buying my high-ticket offers.

THE REAL PROBLEM

Why Most People Struggle to Grow on Substack

A lot of creators are working really hard to make their Substack grow.

They’re posting, commenting, sharing, and talking to people. And I’m guessing you are too.

But if growth still feels slow, it usually comes down to one of three things.

01

You aren’t meeting enough NEW people.

Your content keeps circulating around the same group of people, so growth stays limited.

02

Your relationships aren’t DEEP enough.

People know you, but not enough of those people like you, trust you, and care enough to actively support or buy from you.

03

You aren’t MAINTAINING the good relationships you already built.

The benefits of strong relationships fade if you stop showing up.

This is easy to miss because relationships are mostly built where you can't see them.

You can see a post go viral, a shoutout, a collaboration, a client testimonial, or a launch that gets a ton of buzz. What you don’t see are the DM conversations, Zoom calls, active support, check-ins, and trust that made those things happen.

When you keep meeting new people, building deeper relationships with the right ones, and maintaining the good ones, you create a flywheel where more people discover you, more people trust you, and more people help your work spread or buy from you.

Too many creators simply underestimate how much strong relationships can impact their ability to grow and make money on Substack.

But here’s the good news.

You don’t need hundreds of deep relationships or hours of networking every day. You need a small, growing network of the right people and a simple way to keep those relationships moving forward without letting it take over your day.

THE MAKE FRIENDS GET CLIENTS PROCESS

How You Actually Build Relationships That Grow Your Business

Building strong relationships is a lot easier when you have a repeatable process instead of just “trying to network.”

The goal is to consistently meet new people, deepen the right relationships, maintain the good ones, and make sure the people who trust you know what you sell.

And when they understand what you’re good at and trust that you can actually help them, those relationships start turning into sales.

01

Foundation

Get clear on what you’re building, what you want to be known for, and who you should be connecting with so you know who you're trying to connect with and why.

02

Find

Consistently connect with new people to expand your network and create more opportunities for growth and sales.

03

Comment

Use meaningful comments to get conversations started, build familiarity, and create fun back-and-forth that makes people want to keep interacting with you.

04

DM

Move the right relationships into real conversations where you can get to know each other, build rapport, and create a deeper connection.

05

Support

By going out of your way to actively help, promote, and support others, you become someone people genuinely like, trust, and want to see succeed.

06

Offer Visibility

Make it abundantly clear what you sell, who it helps, and the results you deliver so people who already trust you remember your offer and see you as the right choice.

You’ll notice that you’re never forcing sales conversations.

Instead, you build strong relationships, make your offer visible, and create enough trust that the right people start coming to you ready to buy.

But it only works if you’re building relationships with the right people.

THE RIGHT PEOPLE

So Who Should You Actually Build Relationships With?

Not every relationship helps you in the same way.

The strongest networks give you support, reach, and buyers.

01

Supporters

They give your content energy and engagement, helping it reach more people and create more social proof around your work.

02

Influential Creators

They expose you to new audiences and give you credibility, which helps more people discover you and trust you faster.

03

Potential Buyers and Clients

They make your offers and launches more successful because you're building trust with the people who could use your help the most.

You don’t need every relationship to do everything.

You need the right mix of relationships to keep producing growth, trust, and sales.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

The Daily System That Makes This Easy to Follow

Building and maintaining strong relationships is actually pretty simple when you have the right system to follow.

Some creators barely have anyone showing up yet. Others have more notifications than they can reasonably keep up with.

Either way, you don’t need to spend hours networking or trying to keep up with everyone.

You need a simple daily system that tells you who to find, who to focus on, and where your time matters most.

That way, you’re not just reacting to whoever happens to show up in your notifications. You’re deliberately moving the relationships that matter forward while keeping the whole thing manageable.

SMALL WINS ADD UP

$6,000/year

5 extra $100 yearly paid subscribers per month

$12,000/year

10 workshop seats per month at $100 each

$30,000/year

1 extra $2,500 client per month

You don’t need massive growth for stronger relationships to make a meaningful difference to your income.

WHAT YOU’RE BUILDING TOWARD

How This Can Change Your Business and Life

The goal isn’t just to know more people. It’s to build relationships strong enough that these kinds of things start happening.

  • A bigger creator tells their audience you’re an underrated follow.
  • People DM you to ask about your offer.
  • You get referrals from people who haven’t even worked with you because they like and trust you that much.
  • A creator you respect asks if you want to collaborate.
  • When you launch something, people actually show up to buy it, share it, and talk about it.
  • People show up ready to work with you before you’ve even had to explain your offer.
  • You build friendships so strong you’re willing to travel just to meet and hang out.

Getting there doesn’t require some complicated new strategy.

The tricky part is knowing what to do in the real situations that come up.

Make Friends Get Clients Is Probably Right for You If…

  • You want to grow your Substack and make money from it.
  • You’re serious about building something of your own, even if you haven’t figured out exactly how you’ll monetize it yet.
  • You'd rather grow because people genuinely want to read, support, and buy from you, not because you found another hack that boosts the numbers.
  • You want more people discovering your work, trusting you, and buying from you.
  • You’re willing to consistently show up, connect with people, and follow a simple process.
  • You want hands-on help figuring out what to do, who to focus on, and how to make it work for you.

It’s Probably Not Right for You If…

  • You’re building your Substack purely as a hobby and don’t care about making money from it.
  • You want growth without engaging with or getting to know other people.
  • You’re looking for a done-for-you service where someone else builds your audience for you.
  • You want a shortcut that guarantees fast sales without consistently doing the work.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a large audience?

No.

You can start building the right relationships while your audience is still small. In fact, that’s often when relationships matter most because you don’t yet have a big audience helping you get discovered.

Do I need an existing offer?

No.

You should want to make money from your Substack, but you don’t need to have the perfect offer figured out yet. We can build your relationships and audience while you develop what you want to sell.

Is this only for coaches and consultants?

No.

Coaches are a great fit, but the same process works for creators selling paid subscriptions, books, courses, workshops, services, or other offers.

The people you prioritize will just change based on how you want to monetize.

How much time does this take each day?

It depends on how much time you have available.

The system works best if you can give it around an hour a day, or about five hours a week. But we’ll adjust it based on your goals, where you are in the process, and how much time you realistically have.

What if I’m already getting plenty of engagement?

Then the problem may not be getting more engagement.

It may be figuring out who deserves your attention, which relationships you should deepen, how to build stronger connections, and whether the people engaging with you are actually helping you grow and make money.

Does this replace good content or a good offer?

No.

But good content and good offers still need people around them.

Strong relationships are what help your content get early engagement and spread, help people trust what you sell, and give your offers an audience that’s actually ready to buy.

Without that, even great content and strong offers can sit there and go nowhere.

Is this networking or cold outreach?

Not in the traditional sense.

You’re not collecting contacts so you can pitch them later. You’re building genuine relationships with people you actually like, helping and supporting them, making it easy for them to know exactly what you do, and letting those relationships compound into growth and interest in your offer.

What if I’m not sure whether I’m a fit?

Book a Fit Call.

We’ll talk about what you’re building, where you’re stuck, and what you want Substack to help you accomplish. If I don’t think Make Friends Get Clients is the right next step, I’ll tell you.
